Methodology

How MacAdmin Pulse works

A neutral directory of open-source Mac admin tools that shows, at a glance, whether each project is still maintained. No vendor pays for placement.

How health is scored

Every Monday we check each repository on the public GitHub API and take the most recent of its last push and its latest release.

Active

A commit or release in the last 180 days.

Slowing

Last activity 181–540 days ago. Worth watching.

Stale

No commits or releases for over 540 days.

Archived

Archived by its maintainers on GitHub. Read-only.

Stale isn't the same as broken. Some finished, single-purpose tools rarely need changes. Use health as a signal to check compatibility with the latest macOS, not as a verdict.

MDM scope

Read from each project's README and description. We don't guess.

  • Jamf named for or built on Jamf Pro, with no other MDM mentioned
  • Intune built for Microsoft Intune
  • Multi-MDM several MDMs named, or explicitly MDM-agnostic
  • None works on its own; no MDM named
  • Unverified scope unclear from the docs

Where the data comes from

Stars, last push, releases, license and archive status come from the public GitHub API. Dates are converted to Detroit time (ET). The list started from well-known community projects and curated lists, and it grows over time.

macOS updates and patches

For macOS update and security patch data, we recommend SOFA from Mac Admins Open Source.
